Hey, my name is Scott Munn. I’m a developer and author. After spending a decade building award-winning websites, I’ve recently switched gears to focus on writing, finding a use for that Creative Writing degree I got at Western Michigan University. When I’m not writing (code or fiction), I’m probably spoiling my dog, reading, going for a bike ride, or playing a new favorite video game.
I've been interested in computers ever since I locked our family out of our Windows 3.1 machine at the age of 3. (Sorry!) I got into web design at the age of 12 after starting an email newsletter for fans of the video game Final Fantasy 3. Even after the newsletter dissolved, I spent my teenage years making websites and small programming projects, culminating in a visit to the State Capital to represent my school. In college, in addition to working as a freelance developer, I helped build evaluation software for the National Institutes of Health. In the years that followed, I created numerous websites before settling on a career in Chicago, where I worked at various creative agencies. In 2011, I landed at VSA Partners, where I helped build work that got recognition from the Webby Awards, the B2 Awards, and the Communicator Awards.
As a developer, I get most excited by creating software that transforms perspective and makes complex tasks easy. I like building data-driven applications, such as fitness trackers and productivity optimizers, which create insights from existing data and guide better decisions. I recognize that computers can be used to help people by optimizing what we do, leaving us time for the things that are most important to us.
Ever since writing my first story at the age of six, I've been a fan of storytelling. After taking creative classes in High School, I received my Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University by studying both web design and creative writing. While I focused my career after college in web design, I continued to write in my spare time. In 2017, I published “The Scattering,” a short story prequel to a science fiction series that I've been working on since 2005.
I am currently working on developing my proficiency as a writer. I have numerous novels in the planning / development stage, including the first book in a fantasy series and the first book in a science fiction series, “The New Arbiter.”
An avid reader, I started a reading club with a group of friends last year. So far we've read a diverse list including The Handmaid's Tale, The Velvet Rage, The Wind-up Bird Chronicles, House of Leaves, and more.
My goal is to write books that inspire people and inform them about better ways to live.
I've worked hard to get to where I'm at, but I still consider myself very early in my career and what I was meant to do. If you'd like to be the first to know about my future work, you can subscribe to my email list.
